Also in the Netherlands, also in Friesland: the monument to the Elfstedentocht, the big ice skate rally that goes by eleven cities in Friesland. It is only organised in years when the ice is thick enough, obviously.The monument is in fact a bridge over one of the canals on the tour. It is covered in tiles, each tile carrying the picture of a participant of the tour in the last century. They are arranged in such way that from a distance they form the bigger image of the classic ice skaters on the tour. The typical blue and white Dutch tiles both follow a tradition of centuries of Dutch ceramics and evoke the cold and hard feeling of icy winter when the tour goes out.
